Discussion: Beethoven, Schumann: Piano Concertos - Van Cliburn, Fritz Reiner

Just received this disc today and most enjoyable it is too. I looked up the Beethoven concerto on this site to see if there were any other SACD releases and it seems there really aren't that many that are highly-rated and only one recorded in DSD.

Is there any sign of any historic recordings of this piece making it onto SACD that would be worth investigating?

Is anyone planning a modern DSD-recorded version? Seems rather strange that there's only one - and that comes in a box set!

I also like Cliburn's Prokofiev 3rd (with Hendl), though critics think it "understated." It's eclipsed of course by the classic Janis on Mercury but IMHO Cliburn (and Hendl) really capture the more lyrical, tender, fairy-tale aspects. Janis is pretty driven. It's also nice to hear Cliburn's such perfectly balanced piano chords in the final pages.

Stephen Bishop-Kovacevich springs to mind, with his 2,4 & 5 already re-issued on SACD?

I recall Colin Davis accompanied with the BBC Symphony. For years, even into the CD era his readings were favoured over all others. Still treasure the vinyls & RBs.

Strange indeed that few modern interpreters on SACD have gained approval. Paul Lewis and Steven Hough are good exponents but not on SACD

I too have been surprised that the old warhorse 'Emperor' has not been recorded more often for SACD. I have the Van Cliburn and enjoy it but I get more pleasure from the Linn set. Though a box set it is very reasonably priced and an excellent recording with lovely piano sound from the Bluthner piano. I have never had a definitive answer as to how Linn record. There is no info on the cover and on this site they are not listed as DSD nor PCM! Maybe someone could enlighten us. I have a number of Linn releases and they are all pretty good.

They have 'admitted' recording some earlier discs in DSD, the Poulenc being one of this site's favourite but always stonewall - even ignore that sort of question. They will respond 'though to enquiries about specific repertory.

Their discs are uniformly of a high recording quality but on some you can sense the underlying characteristics of PCM more than on others. One suspects it is all PCM these days, especially wth their lack of interest in physical disc players.

I think Linn would make a point of telling us they record in DSD if they did. It certainly doesn't sound as if they do...

I can cheerfully recommend the Sudbin disc c/w the fourth. Its not DSD but is nonetheless excellently recorded. The Mustonen is in DSD but I can't recommend it as its full of little distortions.

dear fox, where and when was a Kovacevich Emperor released? He is a hero of mine and I'd be thrilled if there was such a recording, but there's no mention of it on this site. Can you point me to it?
Cheers, paul s.

Only Kovacevich's recordings of the 2nd and 4th concertos were reissued on SACD

Beethoven: Piano Concertos Nos. 2 & 4 - Kovacevich/Davis

Here's the list of recordings of the 5th on SACD:

Ludwig van Beethoven - Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major, Op. 73 "Emperor"
