Performance:   Sonics:
Unforgettable melodies, the colorful score, exciting story and masterful orchestration - I guess that Piotr Tchaikovsky's (1840-1894) "The Nutcracker", Op. 71 success based on those things. Today it is the one of the greatest ballets ever, and very popular piece on opera houses and concert halls.

This is the second SACD of the complete ballet music - Pentatone released the first one few years ago. The recording - which is made at the Grieg Hall, Bergen - is outstanding. The rich acoustics of the Concert Hall is captured perfectly. Chandos has made always very good surround recordings - this one is also an impressive listening experience.

The performance is also from the top level. Järvi's tempo choices are mostly briskly: the ballet has filled for the single disc. The total time is almost 85 minutes! There aren't longer free space on the disc: the all capacity is used carefully.
Anyway, Järvi reaches the magical atmosphere of the score: the opening "Ouverture Miniature" is - for example - lovely performed. His approach is very close with Sir Simon Rattle's interpretation (Warner Classics). The special effects - the midnight clock and the gun shot - are effectively made.

Summary: thrilling performance with the stupendous surround sound. Highly recommended, absolutely.
