I am surprised no one has reviewed this disc. It is a reissue of a 1975 Tchaik 4th and a 1960 Nutcracker, both by Bernstein with the NYP. The sound is nice and warm, not surprising coming from an LP master. Interestingly enough, it is actually less muddy on the Nutcracker recordings! The 4th Symphony is my favorite of the six. Having played French horn for the 5th a number of times growing up, my allegiance shifted after hearing this disc for the first time. The presence of Fate in the first movement is ever-foreboding under Bernstein's interpretation.
The Nutcracker performance is also top-notch. For a 44-year-old recording, it was amazing! The strings are light and bouncy, and the brass is powerful and clear.
I would highly recommend this to any Tchaikovsky fan, or any fan of Romantic music period!
