This review pertains only to the Bartok; I have no prior experience with the Lutoslawski and will refrain from commenting on its performance. The disc was purchased based upon the rave 10/10 review in Classicstoday as well as a few excellent SACDs that I have featuring Jarvi and the Cincinnati Orchestra.

First the good news: The sound is magnificent - detailed, full-bodied, and with excellent ambience from the rear channels. This truly is recording at its current best, and the opening of the Lutoslawski will knock your socks off.

Next the bad news: IMHO the first, second, and fifth movements are seriously under-characterized. The timings of these movements reveal much of the problem. In the first movement, Jarvi is 10:36 compared to 10:01 and 9:44 by Reiner and Kocis. In the second movement, Jarvi is 6:43 compared to 6:03 and 6:01 by Reiner and Kocis. In the final movement, worst of all, Jarvi is 10:24 compared to 8:59 and 9:39 by Reiner and Kocis. IMO the tempos taken by Jarvi are simply too slow and drain the music of much of its vitality. In this Hungarian goulash, paprika has been replaced by molasses.

My primary recommendation for performance in this music is Reiner - perhaps I have a prejudice, remembering my purchase of the LP at Goody's when it came out in 1956 - but the sound, although very decent in SACD considering its age, is not up to current standards. The Kocis, however, is a very fine performance and also an exceptionally good recording. This is a good purchase for Bartok enthusiasts. The Jarvi is still a "keeper" for me, and I will use it as part of my SACD demonstration collection.
