Now this is Jazz. The sound is exceptional (Telarc) and the musicians present a cohesive, uniformed set. I usually listen to a CD a couple of times before I critique the sound but hearing the pedals on piano caught me off guard. If any of you have ever been near a piano during a live performance you will know what I am talking about. The guitar is smooth, sweet and mellow. The bass like a Bear, smooth and seems harmless until the right situation. Then BOOM! thunderous (But accurate sonically). This combination works so well because the songs and artists are just right.
This is a session that changes temple sometimes with a dramatic/ overwhelming effect and sometimes it's more subtle. The dramatic works for me, after a quiet slow paced piece; My girlfriend found it disconcerting. She's not a big jazz fan but after sitting with me and listening to this album (Quite unusual) she got up and said "Now that's Jazz."
Telarc knows how to record these sessions better than most and on this album it shows. I hope Concord finds a way to combine the talents of all the Companies they have aquired lately and keep the great sound and music coming.

The more I listen to this, the more impressed I am. I'm not a huge fan of the guitar as a jazz instrument, but Malone really swings-in fact they all do. Great recording-you can really hear the underpinning that Ray Brown adds (in some systems, as noted in another review, this recording might seem bass-heavy). Not cutting edge jazz, just a lot of fun to listen to. Recommended, especially if you like jazz guitar.

Performance: Sonics: |
Old chaps can swing. Oh, yes they certainly do on this album!!! With just the acoustics from the studio itself.
They used a dummy head (Neumann KU-100) as an overall microphone and three separate mic's for close miking. A beautiful, pure and natural recording. The only (very small) disappointment is the somewhat boomy guitar sound. This is the only reason why I gave 4 stars instead of five. Simply marvellous. Highly recommended!!!
