This album showcases all that was good and bad with "progressive rock" in the early 1970's. The album is a mixture of long, epic ballads like The Musical Box and shorter, harmonic songs like Harequin. Overall the longer songs become a bit tedious and by the time you hear "the Fountain of Samalicas", you realise how self indulgent "prog rock" had become at the time. The "Musical box" is the exception as it is an excellently crafted piece of music which really highlights the higher hertz and decibal range you can get on a SACD.

Fortunately fun songs like "Harold the Barrel" and "For Absent friends" make the album more enjoyable.

Phil Collins and Steve Hackett had joined the band for this album and these desire for simpler shorter songs is evident on "for absent friends" and "Harold the Barrel"

Sonically this album is very good and doesn't suffer from the compression and brightness of the 1975-1981 Genesis SACDs.The acoustic instruments are very crisp and the sound from the mellotron/keyboards are also clear but not over-whelming. The multi-channel mix is very good with a clear sound coming out of all five speakers. Highlights are the piano on "Harold the Barrel" and the concert like feel of "The Musical Box".

Re: "Nick Davis used to be a great engineer... what happened?" reviewer.

Check your ears, equipment, or the chip on your shoulder. This remaster elevates the art of Rock on SACD.

See my review of Genesis 1970-1975 for more details on this album.

I am a huge Genesis fan and have these early albums several times over......vinyl...cd...remastered cd and now SACD. The early Genesis albums IMHO are some of the finest progressive rock albums on the planet and in many ways were THE albums that gave birth to Prog Rock. In high school these albums hung in my locker and now some 30+ years later I still love them. With a huge theatrical presence, this mellotron laden masterpiece delicately titled "Nursery Cryme" is an album that literally changed the way I listen to music.

So having said all that how would I rate this mix by Nick Davis ? I really like Nick Davis's mix and find on the SACD that there is a much wider audio spectrum and more depth to the music. There are things I am hearing that I never heard before on this record...little things but just details that were missing before or less pronounced. I was always disappointed in the early redbook CD version of this album and I was much happier with the Davis remastered redbook version...and now ever happier with this SACD presentment of this gem from the golden age of Prog Rock.
