The Hungarian composer Erno Dohnanyi (1877-1960) was a keyboard virtuoso whose avowed musical inspiration was the romantic style of Brahms or Liszt. “His esthetic as a classical musician led him to be able to play by heart not only the twenty-four concertos by Mozart but the two by Brahms,” states Pierre-Emile Barbier in his accompanying liner notes. Author of three symphonies and three operas, he was also excellent at chamber music. This third volume bears witness to his talents, presenting the String Quartet N°1 in A major Op.7, written by a young man of twenty-two and dating from 1899, N°3 in A minor Op.33 from 1926 when the composer was living in the United States. To conclude, the small piece “Ruralia Hungarica” Op.32d for Cello and Piano from 1923 is one of a series of seven pieces for piano. In an optimal sound recording that - let it be noted - only DSD technology can today allow, this Super Audio CD is not to be missed if one is interested in rediscovering the work of a master who worked beside Géza Anda, Annie Fisher, Georg Solti and Gyorgy Cziffra, among others…
