Performance:   Sonics:
This is one of the highlights of audiophile jazz releases in 2010. A varied selection of big band classics from the likes of Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Woody Herman, Kurt Weill and lesser knowns. Lovely swinging arrangements, I could not fault this disc, performance or recording wise. The album is a domestic japanese release so the liner notes are in Japanese but its obvious that most of it is devoted to a detailed explanation of the recording process, recording hardware, mike placements (including their respective preamps), band member position layouts and so on.

Its clearly aimed at delivering a quality recording and it achieves it. Recorded in April 2010 using analogue/tube capture to 192/24 PCM recording format. The Kenichi Tsunoda Big Band is an ensemble of piano, guitar, drums, bass, five saxophones, four trumpet and four trombone players as vell as vibraphone. In particular the bass is well recorded giving it weight and warmth. Reviewed in stereo but I would predict a superb surround sound experience also. This disc was co-released with another similar sounding Kenichi Tsunoda Big Band album "Big Band Stage" not yet reviewed. Big band website: http://www1.ttcn.ne.jp/~tsunokenb.b/cd.htm
