Grammy Award winner? Give me a break. Grammy adjudicators need a good box of Q-tips. This is NOT the greatest performance of Verdi's Requiem, either from the performance or the recording point of view. The tenor, MArio Zeffiri, manages to get a few pitches out of tune. It's a live recording, OK, but I just wish they weren't specially during the vocal quartets. The Chicago Symph. Chorus does an OK job, but sopranos don't get a nice bold timbre in the high notes, especially in the Sanctus. I am very skeptical about the mixing of this recording. The multitrack version lacks clarity which is most apparent in the highly contrapuntal portions of the Requiem. The CSO, not surprisingly, sounds superb. If you can't live with these possible flaws plus an irritating and highly superficial interview with Mutti in the liner notes, then this recording is not for you.
