Performance:   Sonics:
Esoteric seems to have great success transferring the sound of EMI analog masters to SACD, and the result here is worthy of direct comparison to the original English Columbia and German Odeon LP releases--rich, warm and entirely successful in transmitting the sound of Kingsway Hall in London, where much of the fine EMI London recording was done. Unfortunately, only one of the recorded works lives up to that standard. The Schumann 4th has always been my favorite stereo version, and it is one of Klemperer's finest recordings, stately and powerful and seeming to give the lie to the old cliche that Schumann couldn't orchestrate. The Franck, however, shares the virtues of the Schumann as to sound, but the heavy-handed performance is completely devoid of any sparkle or lightness. It is about as Gallic as sauerkraut. An unfortunate coupling for the wonderful Schumann. For a classic recording of the Franck, stick with Monteux on SACD and Paray and Munch on RBCD.
