Jean Sibelius (1865-1957) composed his incidental music to Shakespeare's "The Tempest" in 1925. Later he arranged two orchestral suites from the complete music. This is first SACD from both suites.
BIS has two previous recordings of Sibelius' "The Tempest". Neeme Järvi recorded these suites with Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra in 1980s with fast tempi (BIS-CD-448) and Osmo Vänskä gave world premiere recording from the complete score. I have only Vänskä's interpretation.
By the way, BIS label's engineering is much better than at that time. 5.0 surround recording captures Sibelius Hall's surrounding acoustic, and Orchestra's sound is also much better. The multi-channel mix is better than stereo.
Okko Kamu's tempi are peaceful, which gives the natural Sibelian language to the music. For example the First Suite's Lullaby is lovely and sweet.
Disc's other works are also very good. Tapiola is dark, mysterious work, and Kamu conducts it with feeling. Excellent disc for all Sibelians!
This year the same time will release their Sibelius cycle for BIS. I'm looking forward...
