Coming from the world of electronic music, the composer Anders Hillborg, born in 1954, came back to orchestral music during the 1980s. Today, the body of his works for orchestra reveals an artist of original inventiveness who has not forgotten the masters of his early years (Ligeti, Reich, Xenakis, Feldman, Stravinsky). Thus, we can appreciate “King Tide” dating from 1999, “Exquisite Corpse” from 2002, “Dreaming River” from 1998, and the masterpiece of the recording, “Eleven Gates,” dating from 2005-2006. Three conductors share the direction of these four scores, although the main piece goes to Esa-Pekka Salonen. The music of Anders Hillborg is brilliant, bewitching, and enigmatic all at the same time, even trivial sometimes, without falling into misplaced hermetism, with which many contemporary composers shower us mercilessly. Like John Adams, Anders Hillborg knows how to find the rhythm, essential and determinant, in order to move rather than seduce us. Without a doubt, this is one of the best SACDs of 2011.

Sonics:
The best thing about this release is Hillborg's phrase "sado-modernism"! For me, the music is just too pointless and random. I guess I'm just not into this style anymore. The audio quality becomes a moot issue for me, but I suppose it does *sound* good--maybe a little distant.
