Performance:   Sonics:
This is a reissue of the original HMV coupling of these two concertos. Both are truly great performances and fine recordings--although Severance Hall in Cleveland was not the greatest recording venue, the EMI engineers in 1970 did a better job than the Columbia engineers had done in most of their Cleveland Orchestra recordings. This is the first time the double concerto has appeared on SACD, and since it is arguably the finest recording released in any format, it immediately goes to the top of the list. Oistrakh and Rostropovich take the grand line with the solo parts, and Szell gives them dynamic support. The SACD transfer is easily finer than any previous RBCD release. Neither it nor the violin concerto quite matches the HMV or German EMI LP releases from the early '70s, but the SACD is a great addition to the catalogue. The violin concerto was previously released on SACD by Esoteric, but that limited edition is probably hard to find now. It has a wider dynamic range and gains in clarity and definition, but the difference is not great, and it costs almost twice as much without the double concerto, which probably makes the EMI release an easily preferable choice for most people.
