Performance:   Sonics:
I finally get the chance to own Chet Baker on shm sacd and the results are very excellent indeed.

As a recorded venue its a great jazz album. The synergy and musicianship is more than top notch. I do not own the original sacd from years ago but the reviews are somewhat mixed. This new Shm Sacd is very thrilling......spectacular actually. To be truthful its a tad bright in the cymbal area and the treble can be somewhat hot (not harsh). Joe Jones cymbals cymbals do sizzle a little much and perhaps the best preamps could help tame this quality but its only of little concern.

Other than that the detail is astounding and there is lots of air and atmosphere that make all instruments bloom beautifully.

Baker is renown for his slow, tender ballads but he can plays quite powerfully when he needs to. Jones....as always adds fire and drive to the session....and johnny Griffin plays sax on these proceedings. He;s a name we don't hear enough about.

Bakers trumpet is captured in fantastic fashion with an organic and ;lifelike presence. At times the trumpet and sax play counterpoint to one another. All other instruments are also recorded very faithfully and the synergy is quite remarkable.
One of the things I've noticed about shm sacds (the best ones) is that even the background instruments like bass and drums are given their just deserts and compete with the more forward sounding instruments like the sax or trumpet. With the very best shm's there is just more of everything. And this disc is also transparent which when matched with the other virtues makes for one great sounding experience.

When the volume level is cranked a bit the sound stage is very impressive.......also the back to front presence. Lead instruments really jut out in lifelike sound levels. And as I mentioned earlier the bass and drums are a very integral part of the cohesive whole and more than compete with Baker and Griffin;s lead work.

Highly recommended.
This is one to remember as Mr. Baker had a tragic life and is no longer with us.
