This year I was able to catch Yes live in concert at Toronto's Massey Hall where they played the Yes Album, Close to the Edge and Going For The One in their entirity! And what a better way to relive the Yes'years then a Steve Hoffman mastered SACD of Going For The One.........

The music of Yes has been a huge part of my life and without any hesitation I would say still captivates my imagination with a number of choice albums that I will never forget! Going For The One was and still is one of my favourite Yes albums with the delicate "Turn of the century".....the wonderous "Wonderous Stories" and the epic "Awaken".

Musically Jon Anderson, Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Rick Wakeman and Alan White are at the top of their game and create a huge wall of classic and progressive rock.

I have the original vinyl, and the Rhino remastered RBCD as a reference point in comparing to Hoffman's SACD mastered verison. I would compare the overall sound similar to his mastering of "Close to the edge" to be honest with total clarity and a very even production. The lows of the bass are rich but not over powering and the highs of the keys are strong and seperated but not overpowering. The vocals are for my ears brought out and i think offer the best front and backing voice distinction I have heard. The real standout for me on this mastering is the seperation and musical depth especially in the nooks and crannies of the spaces.

This SACD is rich sounding and the depth created makes this an essential buy for fans of Yes......you wont be dissapointed!

I have been a Yes fan since this album was originally released, so I was excited to enjoy their titles in SA-CD glory. Unfortunately GFTO is a slight disappointment. The mastering is boasted to be a "flat" transfer. Well, it is flat...flat like an old beer compared to other SA-CDs. Format/equipment technology is quite different today vs. 1977 so why would a remaster be kept to the old standard rather than being brought to it's modern-day potential? I guess it's like a classic car, keep it original.

The title song has been described elsewhere as "an assault to the eardrums" and that describes it perfectly...in your face and very much stuck between the speakers. Turn of the Century, with the acoustic guitar and vocals, absolutely clear, absolutely awesome. The piano on Awaken is very nice. Wondrous Stories had always been a percussion demo song, but this version...there's really no shimmering highs. However the bass guitar is superb on Wondrous (and most of the album)...real clear and boingy.

CTTE is also too flat (in my opinion), but after many many listens I've warmed up to it's subtle detail and clarity. GFTO is slightly improving my impression over time, but I still feel it's a mixed bag that fall a little short of it's potential.

I have played this SACD solidly for two weeks hoping I would like it. sadly it is a disappointment. The sound just seems muffled and slightly compressed. Almost like someone threw a blanket over the speakers. I cannot believe with the dynamic range of SACDs that more detail and hertz range could not have been extracted from the master tapes.

It is not all bad. Turn of the Century sounds very good and Rick Wakemans keybord-piano has a warm sound on Awaken.

Wonderous Story just feels flat. The energetic instrumental section in the middle of the track is not present. I have better CD versions of Wonderous Story. Going for the One is similar, certainly loud enough but lacking detail.

I enjoy Audio Fidelitys CDs but think they need to have a re-think about SACDs if the two YES releases are anything to go by.
