It is a veritable anthology of music chosen with passion that this SACD, titled “Guardian Angel,” offers us. As the violinist Rachel Podger explains: “I hope you will like ‘Guardian Angel,’ a title taken from a very beautiful recording that precedes the Passacaille by Biber in his Sonates du Rosaire and which also perfectly fits the endless mysteries we rub shoulders with in this program.” It thus proposes the “Partita for Flute” BWV 1013 in a transcription for violin by Rachel Podger herself taken from the “Airs, Preludes, Allemandes, Sarabandes etc…) by Nicola Matteis, three movements of which the last is without basso continuo, the Sonatas B.a3 and N°13.Bb1 by Giuseppe Tartini, the “Sonata for Solo Violin without bass” by Johann Georg Pisendel, and to conclude, the “Passacaille” taken from the “Sonates du Roasaire” by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber. In a sound recording of rare acoustic finesse that respects the instrumental tone of the “Pesarinius, Genova 1739,” which Rachel Podger plays, this SACD is one of the first wonders of the year 2014.
