I need to amend my previous post. Gurrelieder was recorded by Philips, so it presumably wouldn't have a 4 channel mix, or it would have already been released. One recording that I forgot to mention is the Berlioz Romeo and Juliet with BSO and Ozawa. I notice that Mowrey also lists the Hindemith/Steinberg disc; that would also be a really nice one ... more

Until we actually know what recordings were made with surround channels, it isn't particularly useful to speculate on what would/or could be released. I am sure they will be searching for materials, and I hope that some of the more idiomatic recordings from that period show up with 4 channel tapes. Philips did record an analog version of the Sibelius a couple of years before the Karajan that I much prefer, with Zinman and Rotterdam, and the sound is better than a lot of the Philips from that time as well. You say that 1978 is late for quad mixes, yet the Philips quad mixes in Boston that Pentatone released over the last few years extended to 1980. Let's hope that there are quad mixes of quite a few of their recordings through the 70's. ... more
