Respighi: Pines of Rome & Fountains of Rome - Reiner        (7 of 7 found this review helpful)
  November 10, 2014

I don't know what the Analogue Production team do to these now-elderly tapes, but it must come pretty close to witchcraft. I had told myself that if I already had the RCA Living Stereo SACD of any of these reissues, then I wouldn't be getting the new ones, but that idea was scotched by the ... more
Ravel: Rapsodie Espagnole, Pavane; Rachmaninov: Isle of the Dead - Reiner        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

The RCA Victor Gold Seal RBCD of Reiner's Ravel and Debussy has long been perhaps my favourite Reiner/Chicago disc and I have never understood why it wasn't released in the Living Stereo SACD series. However, here it is at last - or at least part of it - and it sounds wonderful. The measure is ... more
Chopin: Etudes Opp. 10, 25 - Perahia      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

I have little to add to the positive reviews for this disc already posted; but I should like to beg anyone who is lucky enough, as I was recently, to find a copy of this at a reasonable price, not to be put off by the negative reviews on here. The performances are transcendental, and they are ... more
Monteverdi: The Sacred Music 4 - The King's Consort/Robert King          (7 of 7 found this review helpful)
  April 11, 2010

Anyone who starts this disc with track 1, Laetatus sum, will be hooked; over a bouncing ostinato the solo violins, sackbuts, bassoon and, not least, the virtuoso singers of the King's Consort joyously jazz it up. it is all done with an apparently effortless joi de vivre which is completely ... more

Latest Pentatone release's artwork design really sucks!
October 14, 2014
Surely Pentatone's artwork has always sucked? If I had seen any of their RQR series sleeves in a shop without knowing anything about the company, I would have assumed that Pentatone was a cheap and tacky knock-off outfit, rather than a purveyor of some of the best-sounding SACDs around. But then didn't the Pentatone guys mainly graduate from ... more
storage solutions for physical discs?

It's amazing how quickly it gets done if you steadily transfer, say, twenty at a time while enjoying your collection! Though I must admit, 10,000 does sound very daunting - I only have a few thousand. I just recycle the discarded cases. It must be said that the soft sleeves are not as sturdy as jewel cases; but if you interleave them every so ... more

storage solutions for physical discs?

I have ordinary shelving which until recently was completely full. I then discovered (through Alex Ross's blog) these soft plastic sleeves; I estimate they have saved at least a third of the space on my shelves, are perfectly practical if a bit less stable than the conventional jewel cases and have readable spines, much as LPs used to have (for ... more
Stephen Hough

Exactly so - though I'm not remotely on the same exalted level as Mr Hough I am a professional musician, and I tend only really to enjoy my (sa)cd collection when I'm not professionally very busy. Listening to solo piano or chamber music though can be balm to the soul after a day of opera or orchestral music. But please - no good musician I know ... more
